Wantage splits neatly in two for a piano crew. The old town around the Market Place and Newbury Street is stone and brick cottages with the odd low lintel, and the growth is all north in Grove, where Wellington Gate and the other new estates have been going up for a decade. New-build means wide doorways, level thresholds and a ground-floor room waiting for a piano, so Grove deliveries are about as easy as the job gets.
That fixed Saturday is the whole reason this costs £10 a week rather than £30. We are not making a special trip to Wantage, we are already there, so you get the van at route cost instead of one-off cost. Pick whichever Saturday suits you when you book.
Grove, Ardington and East Hendred are on the same Saturday run as Wantage, and so are the rest of the OX12 villages, at the same price.
In the old centre the thing to watch is depth rather than width. Several of the cottage terraces off Mill Street and Newbury Street go straight from the pavement into the front room, which is actually ideal, but some have a step down inside the door, so mention it if yours does. Grove and the Charlton side are modern and straightforward, almost always the plain delivery price. If you are in one of the new three-storey townhouses and want the piano above the ground floor, that is where the stair charge appears.
Stairs are £99 per floor, and that covers carrying it up now and back down at the end. A lift only removes the charge if it is about 1.2 metres deep, because the piano travels standing on its end.
