Hitchin's medieval core is the real thing, Sun Street, Bucklersbury and Tilehouse Street are timber frames behind later fronts, and the halls in there were set out centuries before anyone owned a piano. Around that core the town is kinder: solid Victorian terraces off Nightingale Road and Walsworth Road near the station, and broad inter-war streets out towards Oughton Head.
That fixed Tuesday is the whole reason this costs £10 a week rather than £30. We are not making a special trip to Hitchin, we are already there, so you get the van at route cost instead of one-off cost. Pick whichever Tuesday suits you when you book.
Ickleford, Stotfold and Shillington in SG5 and Codicote, Kimpton and Whitwell in SG4 all share Hitchin's Tuesday run at the same price.
In the old centre we want to know about your doorway, any internal step, and which way the stairs turn, three short answers that make the delivery smooth. The station-side terraces are straightforward, pavement-fronted with workable halls, permit parking worth a mention. Everywhere else, including Ickleford and the SG5 villages, is ordinary family housing that takes an upright without negotiation.
Stairs are £99 per floor, and that covers carrying it up now and back down at the end. A lift only removes the charge if it is about 1.2 metres deep, because the piano travels standing on its end.
