Durham is built around a river gorge, and the climbs are not optional: Crossgate, Gilesgate bank and the streets around the viaduct all mean gradient, and the terraces on them are narrow-fronted with steps at many doors. It is also a city where half the older housing is student-let, so a good share of our deliveries are parents installing a piano in a family home in Nevilles Cross, Framwellgate Moor or the newer estates, where life is flatter.
That fixed Thursday is the whole reason this costs £10 a week rather than £30. We are not making a special trip to Durham, we are already there, so you get the van at route cost instead of one-off cost. Pick whichever Thursday suits you when you book.
Gilesgate, Nevilles Cross, Framwellgate Moor and Belmont are all DH1 and all on the same Thursday run at Durham's price.
Viaduct-area and Crossgate terraces: count the front steps, describe the hall, and tell us what parking honestly looks like on your street, those three answers make a steep-city delivery smooth. The peninsula itself is cobbles and college property, rare for us but welcome, with the walk planned in advance. Framwellgate Moor, Belmont and the modern streets are level and straightforward.
Stairs are £99 per floor, and that covers carrying it up now and back down at the end. A lift only removes the charge if it is about 1.2 metres deep, because the piano travels standing on its end.
